Research and Development Engineer

About Us: 

We are a start-up focused on re-inventing CPR delivery in partnership with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Medventions, Health Innovation Hub (H2i) at the University of Toronto and MaRS Innovation. We are focused on bringing to market a mechanical CPR device which is designed specifically for use within the catheterization lab in addition to providing patient-specific CPR compressions to reduce the injury profile presently existent with current devices on the market. Our U.S. provisional patent was filed in March of 2019. 


In spite of the development of mechanical CPR devices, the AHA only advises their use in unfavorable situations, such as the catheterization lab, where it is very difficult to administer high-quality compressions given the proximity of the necessary imaging equipment. The current devices either use a piston positioned directly above the chest cavity or a load-distributing band, both of which greatly interfere with angiographic imaging and the ability of the healthcare professional to complete time-sensitive procedures with every minute being vital for recovery. Our device enables the procedure to continue without any hindrance to imaging. Come help us revolutionize CPR delivery! 


Role: 

We are seeking a current or recently graduated Masters or PhD student in Mechanical Engineering, with biomedical engineering experience to help us further revise and test our current device. We filed an initial US provisional patent and need someone to lead the engineering efforts to advance the prototype prior to the full utility patent filing next year. While this is an unpaid position, we will support any submissions for grants or funding, and will hope that the individual can grow with our start-up as we further develop and secure funding. Such an internship position can be used in order for further engineering experience, specific to medical devices, as a practicum for current graduate-level degree program.


Required Qualifications: 

· At minimum, currently in or graduated from a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering degree with a focus on biomedical experience. 

· Related experience in medical device's with a focus on Research and Development in electrical and mechanical systems 

· Proficient in SolidWorks and SW Simulation, FEA, Control Theory, Mechatronics, C/C++, Python, Programming microcontrollers/PLCs such as Arduino/Raspberry Pi 

· Capable of hands on rapid prototyping, 3D printing, machining 

· Experience with leading rapid design iteration and making design recommendations with emphasis on human factors and human-machine interaction 

· Ability to independently develop and adapt work plans based on vague or changing project goals 

· Strong hypothesis-driven experimental design and statistical analysis skills 

· Demonstrated experience in creative engineering design 

· Candidates should be self-starters and have a hands-on approach 

· Possess a strong interest in biomedical technology 


Nice to have: 

· Strong knowledge of the design requirements as per 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485 

· Experience with drafting and maintaining DHF and DMR documentations

Primary Functions: 

• Present at a variety of pitch competitions on behalf of RescuBeat

• Assist with business development activities

• Support pricing and market analysis activities 

• Conduct market research on potential clients and maintain client/prospect information 

• Conduct and prepare analysis of our addressable market

• Prepare and conduct marketing campaigns 


Qualifications:

• Marketing or business background

• Comfortable working in a sales environment

• Well organized 

• Able to work individually and as part of a team 

• Excellent communication skills
